“Taxes” is a trigger word like no other. Even those that are purposely indifferent to politics have something to say when the subject is brought up. And as with everything political, opinions vary wildly. However, I’ve never overheard someone expressing their joy of the tax filing process. Convoluted paperwork, facing the reality of your own financial situation and in some cases, having to perform a tedious task that results in owing Uncle Sam a bigger cut. Then, there is that special lot of folks near and dear to my heart, the procrastinators . . . I’m raising my now cold coffee to you. Anyway, this post is specifically for you.

As you head to the post office in what is sure to be a dreadfully long, time-consuming affair, it is important to us that you feel that you’ve passed the time constructively. Sure, you can bring a book or text your buddies about how you can’t believe how long the line is, but we don’t want you to simply pass the time, we want you to make it special for you and your fellow last-minute line warriors.

Five Things to Do While Waiting in Line to Send Your Taxes:

1. Urge others to join you in exercising

That’s right. We’ve heard you say it, “I want to exercise, but I just don’t have the time.” Now is your time to shine and lead others down the cardio road to glory. Be sure to dress for the experience with appropriate sweat gear and headband and don’t leave home without your boombox . . . music will really elevate the experience. You could even cater to the occasion with instructions like, “Let’s do our extensions,” and “Come on guys, nobody’s exempt from giving their all,” and of course, “OK everybody, time for a break.”

2. Cheer every time the lines moves

Cheering is infectious. And while people may initially act put off by your celebration, they’ll come around. Coordinate something or simply free style . . . it’s all good.

3. Write a story with the other people in line

Most of us have participated in these types of activities. Throw the first sentence out and let the fun begin. Everyone in line would continue adding a new sentence until you had  a completed story. You could write it all down, collect all the participant’s emails and send them the story as a keepsake of your special day together. I tried this earlier in the office, but it didn’t work so well. The story turned out like this.

All was quiet at the SOTRU office on a gorgeous Monday morning until we heard a knock at the door. You’re doing what? You do realize how busy we are right? Someone is at the door? Brenton I think we need to discuss your job description.

4. Get your half of the line to challenge the other half to a game of Red Rover

It’s a classic and everybody knows how to play. Red rover, red rover send the funnest person in line right over!

5. Invite others to join you in doing the stamp dance

The stamp dance could take a number of different forms. You could take the route of the celebrated “shopping cart” or “lawn mower” and just replicate the experience of putting a stamp on a letter and mailing it in dance form, or just create something from scratch. People love watching someone dance solo and if you’re into it, they won’t be able to resist joining in.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Think about the illuminating social experiments you could conduct or trying out those new ice breakers you’ve been working on. Any way you dice it, this could be a truly memorable tax day for you, and maybe a few others. But if you get into some kind of trouble, please don’t mention SOTRU. Godspeed and good luck!
