SOTRU’s Veterans Day Special

By State of the Re:Union

For Veterans Day, SOTRU produced a special radio hour that goes beyond the news headlines to tell stories of the emotion, challenges and victories that occur when soldiers return home from duty.

From reflecting on their experiences and healing wounds in unexpected ways to providing purpose and support for their brothers and sisters in arms, this episode explores how veterans are serving each with the same bravery and courage with which they served our country.

SOTRU would like to thank all of our country’s brave soldiers and veterans for their service and sacrifice. We hope you enjoy the episode and invite you to tell us what you think by visiting and commenting on our Veterans Day Special discussion.

Dear America
With every episode, State of the Re:Union asks residents of the location we’re exploring to write a letter personifying their city or town and discovering what people would say to their city if they could say anything to the place that they call home. For our Veterans Day Special we partnered with KUT in Austin, Texas, Georgia Public Broadcasting, and North Country Public Radio in upstate New York to request Letters to America from veterans in their communities. Thanks to their help we received a wide range of personal, authentic letters that reflect how vets feel about their service, country and community. Listen to the episode, read the Dear America Letters and explore all of our Veterans Day Special collateral.

    Hello:

My name is Michael Hoskins; I was interviewed by Sara Wood for this project. I want to thank all of you for caring enough to tell a very small part of our stories. Not a day passes that Vietnam is always on my mind.

The nightmares are not so bad anymore; finding “O” has helped find myself. Richard is my Bro and I love him like a brother, which we are simply brothers from different mothers.

O saved my life at Gio Linh; I was wounded twice in a five minute span and was literally unconscious on my feet wandering through a heavy artillery attack. Richard came and got me, taking me to the only safety we had, which was our parapet for our 105mm howitzer.I was later medivaced.

I was the one who always asked him to play “Younger Girl.”

God Bless you all; it was a honor to serve all of you in Vietnam. I hope in a small way we made a difference for you…
